The first edition of the rankings last year , released Oct. 28, meant little to the final set in early December.

The state of Mississippi was flying high with undefeated Mississippi State at No. 1 and one-loss Ole Miss at No. 4. Those teams fell to No. 7 and No. 8 in the final rankings.

Florida State, the defending national champion at the time, was the only team in the top four that remained there throughout the remainder of the regular season, while Oregon and Alabama were just outside at No.5 and No. 6, respectively.

As for eventual national champion Ohio State? The Buckeyes we well outside the picture at No. 16.
