As good as those performances were, though, they will not be rewarded for their efforts as NASCAR announced Wednesday that both men were assessed an L1 penalty and docked 20 driver and owner points as punishment.

Both drivers had rear-window violations.

“We had a minor part failure due to the heavy loads and track conditions experienced at Dover,” Stewart-Haas Racing vice president of competition Greg Zipadelli said in a statement. “It had no competitive impact, and our racecar fit all the templates and passed all the inspections throughout the race weekend, including pre- and post-race.”

The car chiefs for both were suspended for two races as well and each team has been fined $50,000.

Kurt Busch’s team also was fined $10,000 for having one lug nut not secure upon post-race inspection.
